About me

Jilly established her design studio in 2012 after graduating from Sparsholt College with a Foundation Degree (Distinction) in Garden Design and being awarded the prestigious Garden Design Trophy. She is a friend of the Society of Garden Designers and is in the process of building her portfolio to become a fully Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers.

Her skill in interpreting the landscape and linking this to the garden loci comes from a lifelong passion for geography and working in the environment sector.  Jilly's family have also greatly influenced her design philosophy, style and her approach to working with clients. Her father, a Scottish Architect trained at the Glasgow School of Art,   instilled a belief that 'form follows function' and this is the cornerstone of her conceptual development.  Jilly's great Aunt Beatrice trained in the Paris School of Art with the renowned Scottish Architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and her beautiful botanical water colour paintings have also influenced Jilly's love of art in the garden.

Jilly keeps up to date with best practice and regulations by regularly attending CPD events through the Society of Garden Designers and is a member of the Southampton Area SDG Cluster Group.

What my clients say

 Mr & Mrs H

"Jilly has extended our living space with beautifully designed, inviting and functional garden areas. We were impressed with Jilly's ability to take our brief and translate it into innovative designs. The garden is filled with vibrant planting combinations that provides interest throughout the year. A hallmark of Jilly's designs are hidden features and numerous vantage or seating areas, allowing us to constantly discover and enjoy different aspects of the garden.    Her attention to detail is evident in the harmony she achieves between hard landscaping and soft planting. There's definitely an element of fun too; our children garden boasts a tunnel and den area which is perfect for our two little explorers.  Our garden has added value to our home, but more importantly, it has become an important place for us as a family to enjoy quality time together. Thank you Jilly, we absolutely love our gardens!"

Mr & Mrs S

"Jilly provided us with a series of fantastic designs for different areas of our garden. Our garden is quite complex, with many different levels and we really needed some inspiration as to how to landscape the garden to suit our needs. Jilly came up with some brilliant designs that took into account our requirements, but was also in keeping with our house.

Jilly is very thorough and conscientious, and cares very much that her projects are implemented well and to the satisfaction of her customers.  We are delighted with the end result."

Mr & Mrs A

"We asked Jilly Cook to create designs for our main garden, kitchen garden and the area at the front of the house.
She really listened to our brief and took on board everything that we were looking for from our outdoor space. Jilly came up with beautiful, creative designs that totally captured our requirements. I would recommend her services to anyone looking for an individual, personally tailored approach to garden design.

Mr & Mrs R

"Jilly was asked to set out a strategic and bold plan for our total garden and then to implement this in stages, to suit our budget and our ability to maintain the completed areas.  We were really impressed with Jilly's working methodology. Commencing with a full site appraisal, including trials pits, soil test samples and a measured survey, we were then able to discuss our brief and develop this into the concept stage. We were presented with options for the layouts, which included hard and soft landscaping, in the form of plans and beautiful 3D sketches. This gave us the confidence to instruct Jilly to prepare detailed drawings for construction and soft planting. The attention to detail was evident from the care that she took in asking for comments and developing the scheme to reflect our brief, with very detailed construction drawings for
Contractors, who commented on their usefulness and quality. We commenced with our large patio area, which included new brick walls, stone paving and trellising. All the soil had to be imported and the planting plan has given us a delightful space that is used frequently and enjoyed by visitors. A special water feature has been designed using a unique bronze bowl with water running through a curved pipe and picked out by strategically placed lighting.

The main garden areas were created out of soft planting into a geometric form of a grassed area, allowing family games and relaxation when required. The planting is exquisite, with special screening trees and bushes, augmented by a series of colourful perennials in deep borders. The range of colours and textures this summer have been delightful and the bees have thoroughly enjoyed their new food sources. It is a source of much pride and enjoyment for us through the
changing seasons. We congratulate Jilly on creating such a successful garden for us and can recommend her skills to
any Clients who need a helpful designer with vision."
